On Saturday June 27th the Ravens travelled north to battle long standing rivals the Laval Nomades.
On a grey, humid, rainy day the players were greeted by a playing field doing a great impersonation of a swimming pool. The Ravens came to win today and got off to a great start with new dad, Hasashi crashing over for a try after just 5 minutes of play.
New import Tom Ash calmly added the extra 2 points to have the Ravens up by 7. It was up & down the paddock for the next 15 minutes until a lapse in defensive concentration allowed the Nomades to level up at 7 points a piece.
Both sides knuckled down and there was no score until the 10th minute of the second half when Laval scooped a loose ball in open play and made a break down the right touch line to eventually get over for the last score of the match. The Ravens gave a hard push in the last 15 minutes to try & force the win. They had the Noamdes stuck on their own goal line for the last 10 minutes but there defense held firm and the final result was 14-7 to Laval.
While it was our 3rd straight loss for the 2009 season we have certainly made vast improvement and our first win is just around the corner. Overall, positional play and execution was greatly improved from the last match, especially considering the very wet, greasy conditions.
It was a difficult task to select a man of the match with several stand out efforts. In the end it went to debutant Alejandro Ludert, playing at prop for his hard straight running and solid scrum work.
Congratulations to Alejandro and well done to all players for showing that fighting Raven spirit and pushing Laval right to the final whistle.
We will get them next time!
NEW TIME: 1:30 pm for the game against laval. We need to be at the field no later than 12:30 pm at Laurier Secondary High School in Laval. For directions visit Google maps.
Breakfast will be at the usual place and time should be confirmed tomorrow.
Fly, fly
Score a try
Kick, kick
Kick it through
This is what we gotta do
Hit’em hard and tackle low
This is how they’ll know
They’re playing Westmount now
Westmount, Westmount
That’s who we are
But that don’t mean
We’re just happy to play the game
We want to win it all the same
Know it, know it
Yes, know it well
We’re here to make it hell
AS never not easy
Is how it should be
When Westmount is who you play
So we’ll run and run
And run it hard
As we score many a try
A nd kicks of course are surely good
That is but what
We’re going to do

Last game I forgot to add the new straight arm man of the match. Karl was awarded the straight arm man of the match due to his hard running. The straight arm was never completed so it looks like there could be a penality for Karl.
This weekend’s game is against Laval and it is going to be a cracker!
This week training is on for Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30pm til late. It is important that we all attend this week and next week as we have two weeks off and we need to maintain our fitness.

So far this season we have two winners of this award:

The Westmount Player who wins the most straight arm awards will be required to straight arm a Peel Pub Jumbo Jug. The favourite to win the award is Guillaume
