The Westmount Ravens is the  oldest rugby club in North America and back in the day Westmount had a club house right next to Westmount high.  Celebrating 132 years of rugby we are looking to rebuild the club back to the glory days and we need funds to help build a club house so we can store our memorabilia and where we can hang out after matches and training.

We ask kindly if you could donate $1 to help build a club house so we have place a donation button on the side menu.

The numbers coming out to training have been great and welcome to all the new Ravens.  I can not remember everyone’s name so apologies for not including you all.  Keep an eye out for Thursday’s training, there is no official word on Thursday but be ready.  Saturday we are at Forbes field, keep an eye out for the time.

Don’t forget that membership fees are due and Seniors are $250 and Students are $200.  We still have on sale previous seasons jerseys and if you are interested speak with Tony.

Finally, the junior rugby program is close to starting and JS will be looking after the junior rugby team.  It is everyone’s responsibility to help JS so if you are interested please speak with JS or Tony.

There is plenty of social club news and first off we would like to Welcome our new members to the club! Frank, Remi, Julienand Phillippo.  Thanks for coming to training and we look forward in playing with you all.  Don’t forget that the season has not started yet and welcome all new players young and old to play rugby in montreal.

Birthday News – At training on Tuesday wish Andy and Hisashi a Happy Birthday.  Andy is actually 7 years old :)

Belly News – The Australian pie shop is expected to open this Friday.  It is right next door to Dusty’s on Parc and Mont Royal.

Club Jersey’s – Westmount rugby jersey’s from 2008 / 2009 are on sale and are selling fast.  Speak with Tony about getting a Jersey  today.

Don’t forget that training is on Tuesday at 7:30,  1090 Greene Avenue below Dorchester.

The IRB sent out an  email last week regarding charging into the ruck rules.  Please review the law and if you have any questions on the law.  We can review on Tuesday.

16.2 JOINING A RUCK
(b) A player joining a ruck must bind on a team-mate or an opponent, using the whole arm. The bind must either precede, or be simultaneous with, contact with any other part of the body of the player joining the ruck.
Sanction: Penalty kick
10.4 DANGEROUS PLAY AND MISCONDUCT
(g) Dangerous charging. A player must not charge or knock down an opponent carrying the ball without trying to grasp that player.
Sanction: Penalty kick
(h) A player must not charge into a ruck or maul. Charging includes any contact made without use of the arms, or without grasping a player.

We have a new coaching structure for the upcoming season. The Ravens are very happy to announce the appointment of Henry Rozenblat as Team Manager for the Ravens in 2010. Henry will be supported by Mike Hogan as Assistant Coach and Ray ‘The Claw’ Bessette as Trainer.

Henry is a Westmount Old Boy and brings a wealth of rugby experience to the club. He is a seasoned player, coach, referee and administrator.  Henry was a member of the Outremont High School rugby team who were Montreal Champions in 1964 & ’65. After high school he joined the Barbarians RFC and played hooker from 1965-71 and was a Q.R.U representative player and Chairman of the Q.R.U. Disciplinary committee in 1969. He played hooker in the Montreal Select XV in 1969, ’70 & ’71 and the Montreal Caribou Select XV in 1969 & ’70. Henry joined Westmount RFC in 1972 and played prop, hooker and occasionally fly-half until he retired from playing in 1980. After retiring as a player Henry was a member of the Quebec Society of Rugby Referees from 1984-1999 and obtained a Level III National Certification.

Westmount Rugby is now on twitter.  Hopefully, in the coming days we will the Twitter account synchronized with the website.

Training is back at Westmount High. It should be a good training session in about 27 degrees heat! Coming up this Thursday is the old boys drinks at McKibbon’s Pub, 1426 Bishop St. So keep your night free for a good get together.

Who would of thought that the Qld Reds beat Auckland Blues in Auckland on the weekend! 

Late news but last week the British and Irish Lions squad was announced on April 23rd.  The 37 man squad is predominately made but up of Welsh and Irish players and the squad only contains two Scotish players!

Westmount Rugby Club

The Westmount Rugby Club is the oldest active rugby club in North America, founded in 1876. We have an international flare, and play in the 2nd Division.
