The Westmount Ravens posted its second home victory, improving to a 2-1 record for the 2011 season. The game was played against another tough opponent, who played a strong game. Matt “Anakin” Peris made a spectacular return to rugby after a two year absence, scoring a try in the early minutes of the game. Julien Marrel made the conversion and scored on penalties, making his boot more and more trustworthy. The other try of the game was scored by Jamie Fortunaso. WRC won this bittersweet game, but lost its fearless Captain, Tom Edmeades, indefinitely. Our thoughts are with our Captain and we wish him a speedy recovery. The Man of the Match was awarded to Matt “Anakin” Peris for a strong performance. WRC would like to thank the referee and the St-Jean Barracudas.

WRC will play next week against the NDG Exiles.

Westmount Rugby Club Wins Season Debut.

On Saturday May 14th, WRC hosted the Laval Nomads to kick off their 2011 campaign, and what a kick off it was! Played on a rainy and windy day, WRC got to a fine start scoring its first try within 3min of initial kick-off. The Ravens were able to capitalize on all their pre-season hard work and success and carry that onto the real competition, moving the ball well, communicating and pushing the pace all through the game, along with playing very solid defense. The final score was 24-0. The Man of the Match was awarded to Pierre “Filter” Gachette, and the Hard Hat award was given to Wesley Wana, both new faces on the team this year. The WRC would like to thank the Laval Nomads for a great game and the referee.

WRC will be visiting the Montreal XV this Saturday May 28th, and the team will be working hard to keep the momentum going, taking one game at a time, working hard and taking nothing for granted.

On Saturday June 27th the Ravens travelled north to battle long standing rivals the Laval Nomades.

On a grey, humid, rainy day the players were greeted by a playing field doing a great impersonation of a swimming pool. The Ravens came to win today and got off to a great start with new dad, Hasashi crashing over for a try after just 5 minutes of play.

New import Tom Ash calmly added the extra 2 points to have the Ravens up by 7. It was up & down the paddock for the next 15 minutes until a lapse in defensive concentration allowed the Nomades to level up at 7 points a piece.

Both sides knuckled down and there was no score until the 10th minute of the second half when Laval scooped a loose ball in open play and made a break down the right touch line to eventually get over for the last score of the match. The Ravens gave a hard push in the last 15 minutes to try & force the win. They had the Noamdes stuck on their own goal line for the last 10 minutes but there defense held firm and the final result was 14-7 to Laval.

While it was our 3rd straight loss for the 2009 season we have certainly made vast improvement and our first win is just around the corner. Overall, positional play and execution was greatly improved from the last match, especially considering the very wet, greasy conditions.

It was a difficult task to select a man of the match with several stand out efforts. In the end it went to debutant Alejandro Ludert, playing at prop for his hard straight running and solid scrum work.

Congratulations to Alejandro and well done to all players for showing that fighting Raven spirit and pushing Laval right to the final whistle.

We will get them next time!
