Westmount Ravens, 2011 C Division Champions! These five words, in that order, cap all the hard work and training that started in February of this year. The Grand Final, which was held at the Montreal Irish RFC grounds in St Julie, was a tough 80 minutes of intense rugby. The match got off to a fast start for the Ravens, with Ugo Landry-Tolszczuk having an 80 meter run from kick off, and WRC going to work pinning the Montreal XV inside their 22m line for the first 10 minutes of the game, finally coming away with 3 points, a penalty scored by Julien Marrel. The XV tied the game with a penalty of their own, and were awarded a penalty try after WRC’s fullback was penalized on a late tackle, bringing the score to 10 – 3 for the XV. Continued pressure from the XV resulted in a try after one of their forwards broke through the defense, and after missing the conversion, the score at half-time would be 15-3 against Westmount.

The Ravens refused to lay down, and after starting the second half with very heavy pressure, were rewarded with back to back penalties, which were converted by Man of the Match Julien Marrel, bringing the score to 15 – 9 and effectively bringing WRC back into the game. Back and forth play ensued, but a fantastic display of individual effort by Ugo Landry-Tolszczuk resulted in a try under the goal posts, and with Julien Marrel converting the kick, the Ravens would take the lead of the game, 16- 15, with 20 minutes left in the game. The next 15 minutes showed a determined XV, who pinned WRC inside their 22m line, but the Ravens refused to break and defended their try line against everything the XV threw at them. Finally, the Ravens spent the final 5 minutes of the game inside the XV territory, mounting the final attack and grinding out the victory over a very tough opponent. It was WRC’s discipline that kept them in the game, their refusal to give up and incredible show of heart in this come from behind victory.

WRC is now the proud champion of the new Roy Harvey trophy, named after a Westmount Old Boy (for his many years of service to rugby in Quebec & Canada as an administrator and international referee), created after the FRQ merger with the Eastern Ontario Rugby Union, and we are the first club to win it!

The Westmount Ravens would like to thank every single person who has supported the club over the years, whether cheering at the games or encouraging us through the season; The Old Boys and the Wives and Girlfriends for their patience and support. This victory belongs to you as much as it belongs to us, the players!

Les Ravens de Westmount, Champions 2011 de la Division C! Ces mots représentent le dur travail de toute une saison qui a débutée en Février de cette année. La Grande Finale, qui s’est déroulée sur les terrains du Montréal Irish RFC à St Julie, a tenu joueurs et spectateurs en haleine pendant 80 minutes. Le match a pris un départ rapide pour les Ravens avec une course magnifique de 80 mètres d’Ugo Landry-Tolszczuk suivie d’une domination des Ravens dans les 22 mètres du XV de Montréal, domination qui s’est soldée par les trois points d’une pénalité transformée par Julien Marrel. Le XV a riposté par une pénalité puis s’est vu accorder un essai de pénalité par l’arbitre suite à un plaquage à retardement de notre arrière. C’est alors 10-3 pour le XV. Un autre essai de Montréal porte la marque à 15-3 à la mi-temps. Dès la reprise, les Ravens mettent une pression constante sur le XV et c’est payant : la botte de Julien ajoute 6 points au tableau, ce qui porte le score à 15-9.
Le match est encore équilibré et les deux équipes bataillent avec ardeur. C’est alors qu’un effort individuel remarquable d’Ugo Landry-Tolszczuk se termine en un essai sous les poteaux que notre botteur Julien “Botte d’Or » Marrel transformera pour porter le score à 16-15. Les quinze minutes suivantes sont à l’avantage de Montréal XV et c’est l’occasion pour Westmount de faire une démonstration de leur défense.

Les cinq dernières minutes de la rencontre appartenaient ensuite aux Ravens qui ont mené la dernière attaque du match avant le coup de sifflet final ! La discipline, le refus d’abandonner et un cœur énorme ont ainsi permis aux Ravens de remonter le score pour finalement l’emporter d’un unique mais énorme point !

Le WRC est donc le fier champion du nouveau trophée Roy Harvey, nommé en l’honneur du joueur émérite de Westmount pour ses nombreuses années au service du rugby, tant au Québec qu’au Canada en qualité d’administrateur et d’arbitre international. Ce trophée fut créé après la fusion de la ligue de l’Est de l’Ontario avec la FRQ, et nous sommes le premier club à l’emporter!

Les Ravens de Westmount tiennent à remercier toutes celles et ceux qui ont soutenu le club durant toutes ces années, que ce soit en venant voir les matchs ou avec des mots encourageants; les anciens du WRC ainsi que les épouses et copines pour leur patience et leurs encouragements. Cette victoire vous appartient autant qu’à nous, les joueurs!

This past Saturday WRC sealed its first trip to the final in a few years, defeating the Montreal Exiles by the score of 27 – 8. The game got off to a fast paced start, as the Exiles converted on an early penalty minutes after kick-off. They scored what would be their last points of the game on an intercepted pass a few minutes later. WRC was able to keep their cool and soon were on the scoring board, with Julien “Golden Boot” Marrel scoring his first penalty of the game. Ugo Landry-Tolszczuk followed with a try shortly after, barreling through the Exile defense. The game would be an intense affair, with both sides playing good, hard clean rugby. The other tries of the game were score by Dr Pantcho Stoyanov, and Jamie Fortunaso scoring two tries. WRC would like to thank the Exiles and referee.

The Wesmount Ravens will now face off against the Montreal XV, in what promises to be THE game of the season. The final game of the season is here, and WRC is going to leave all on the field and go for that cup! The game will be played at the Montreal Irish R.F.C grounds in St Julie, at 10.30am.

Les Westmount Ravens ont garanti leur participations aux finales de la saison 2011 en battant les Exiles de Montréal par la marque de 27 -8. Le match a connu un début trépidant, avec les Exiles marquant les premiers points avec une pénalité quelques minutes après le coup d’envoi. Quelques minutes plus tard ils marqueraient leurs derniers points du match avec une interception de passe terminée par un essai. WRC fut capable de maintenir son sang-froid et commencer à marque des points avec Julien “Botte d’Or” Marrel marquant une pénalité. Ugo Landry-Tolszczuk fit suite avec le premier essaie des Ravens. Les autres essais furent marqués par Dr Pantcho Stoyanov et Jamie Fortunaso, qui eut 2 essais. WRC aimerait remercier les Exiles et l’arbitre.

Les Westmount Ravens feront face au Montréal XV en ce qui promet être LE match de la saison! La finale de la saison 2011 est enfin ici, et WRC va laisser tout sur le terrain pour la coupe! Le match sera disputé sur le terrain des Montreal Irish R.F.C à St Julie, 10h30.

The time has come. This Saturday, at 3:00pm, the Westmount Ravens will face-off against the Montreal Exiles @ Confederation Park. All that we have worked for this summer, all the sweat and bruises and blood, the injuries and victories, is finally here. Due to unforeseen circumstances, WRC will not have access to its home field. Due to our high ranking in the division, this should be a home game, so, LET’S MAKE THIS A HOME GAME! Ravens fans and supporters, girlfriends and wives, and anyone who wants to see a great game of rugby, come out to support us! We have worked hard this summer and we will not stop until the very end, when the Westmount Ravens claim their first division title in many years.

Le temps est enfin arrivé. Ce samedi, à 15hrs, les Ravens de Westmount affronteront les Exiles de Montréal, au Parc de la Confédération. Tout le fort travail qu’on a fait cet été, toute la sueur et le sang, toutes les blessures et victoires nous amènent à ce match. Due à des circonstances hors de notre contrôle,  WRC n’aura pas accès à notre terrain, même si du à notre haut placement dans la division ceci devrait un match à domicile. Mais, n’importe! FAISONS CE MATCH UN MATCH À DOMICILE! Supporteurs et fans,  femmes et petites copines, et tous ceux qui veulent voir un excellent match de rugby, venez nous supporter! On a travaillé très fort cet été et on ne s’arrêtera pas jusqu’à la fin, quand les Ravens de Westmount gagneront leur premier titre de champion en plusieurs années!

WRC will be watching and supporting Canada in their debut match vs Tonga at Le Bull pub tonight, at 12.30 am. A reporter from the CBC will be there to interview rugby mad fans, so come out at support Canada!!
